A good starting point, since we are here... and a chance to say that we have a
bias to the Outdoors and getting Out-of-Town "away from it all". We do love
Disney World & Epcot - they are 10s - and similar main attractions, but
they have their own Web sites!
Fort De Soto Park
This Pinellas County park may be the best "beach" park in Florida, outside of
the Keys. Great Camping, Fishing, Biking and Beach activities. Two fishing
piers. Dr. Beach's #2 pick for 2003.
Shell Key
One of the last, undisturbed Barrier Islands in Florida, it is accessible only
by boat and is a famous bird preserve.
Egmont Key
Also accessible only by boat, there is a ferry from one of the Fort De Soto
piers.
Marie Selby Botanical Gardens
Marie Selby Gardens' world renowned orchid and bromeliad collections, as well
as its butterfly, banyan, bamboo and other display gardens has been named one
of the Top Ten Botanical Gardens in America.
Siesta Key Beach And RV Park
Siesta Key Beach is #15 on Dr. Beach's list of the Best Beaches in America
(Florida has 4 of the top ten). Six miles long and 100 yds deep with a gentle
slope off the beach so you can wade far out, I have seen none that are whiter
and, especially, none that are as soft. I could not feel the grains of sand
when rubbing it between my fingers! The Nearby Gulf Beach RV Campground RV is not recommended,
due to poor customer relations, lost reservations and narrow sites.
